Hunting Michigan Hardwoods in October

Early season pressure, changing food sources, cooler mornings, and how to think about October movement.

August 2026 · 7 min read

October in Michigan can change quickly. Warm afternoons, cold mornings, changing food sources, and hunting pressure can all affect how deer move.

Early in the month, food can still dominate movement. Pay attention to acorns, agricultural fields, browse, and transitions between feeding and bedding cover.

As the month progresses, scrape activity and buck movement may increase, but that does not mean every sit suddenly becomes a rut hunt.

Pressure matters. Areas close to roads and easy access often change quickly once hunters begin entering the woods regularly.

Weather changes can create useful windows, especially after warm stretches. A sharp temperature drop can sometimes improve daytime movement.

The key is to hunt the conditions in front of you rather than hunting the calendar alone.
